Thomas P. Rowe Artworks

About the Artist
"Every dot....is one of anticipation; of, "What is to come next?"

Born in San Francisco, California in 1948, Tom grew up in nearby Lafayette.  He was educated mostly at private schools until college.  Tom's art education began in a somewhat unusual venue when he was accepted to the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture.  The stippling techniques he learned for architectural renderings compelled him toward the ultimate realization that he was more drawn to art than architecture.  He attended California Arts and Crafts in Oakland, followed by 4 years at Cal State Hayward, where he expanded his drawing skills and learned printmaking, including etching and lithography.

Tom works primarily with pen and ink drawing.  Most of his work is stippled, using technical drafting pens. He does some watercolor, and has done quite a bit of etching on copper.

He discovered early in his art education that he could become bored with a drawing when he knew its outcome.  An assignment to doodle for 40 hours on an 18 x 24 piece of good paper was the beginning of Tom's free-form art as we see it today.  He spends as much time studying a piece he is creating as he does stippling it; watching the picture unfold/evolve through his hands.

Tom lives and works in Aptos, California where he has a small home studio.  He shares his life with his wife Elie, their 3 cats, and many friends.  He enjoys garden scale model trains, music and gardening.  He has played music for many years with a small group of friends and fellow artisans, called The Aptosians.
